MyPlate Lesson Plan (4th - 5th grade)
Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Purpose of the Lesson
Through understanding the different components of a balanced diet and recognizing whole grain vs. refined grain foods, students can make informed consumption decisions, specifically about how much whole grains they should be consuming.
Lesson Objectives
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify the different components of a healthy, well-rounded diet
Identify how much of your grain consumption should be whole grains
Identify what makes a food considered a "whole wheat food"
Differentiate between foods that are whole grain vs. refined grain

Grade 4:
4.7.3.N Identify ways to establish and maintain healthy eating practices consistent with current research-based guidelines for a nutritionally balanced diet.
Grade 5:
5.1.8.NÂ Describe the benefits of eating a nutritionally balanced diet consistent with current research-based dietary guidelines.
Lesson Activity
Time 0-5 min:
Introduction
Ask students to share what they ate for dinner the night before
Ask them if what they ate contained whole grains
Ask students to share what they ate for breakfast
Ask them if what they ate contained whole grains
Time 5-20 min:

Present slides
Time 20-35 min:
Play Grains Bingo
Print Bingo boards
Access word bank on Activity slide from presentation(last slide)
Call off grain foods in a random order.
After calling a food, ask the class
Is this a whole grain food?
Time 35-40 min:
Whole Wheat Discussion
Debrief the Bingo Board
Have students star all the whole grain options
Why is it important to pay attention to if foods contain whole grain?
Adaptations
Laminate the bingo boards to be reused in future classes
Use dry erase markers on them
