Wheat2School Project
We want schools to grow grains in their gardens, to connect with local farmers, and to embrace whole grains!
MISSION OF THE PROJECT
The Wheat2School Grant Project aims to provide curriculum freely to any teacher in order to educate children about agriculture and healthy eating habits that include whole grains. The project supports hands-on agriculture and nutrition education, along with the consumption of local whole grains among students and their communities through an edible grain garden.
WHY WHEAT?
Whole grains are nutritious! They provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber into the diet, which many young kids are not getting enough of.
Wheat is an excellent seed for student experiments since it grows rapidly and quickly responds to experimental variables such as changes in light, water and nutrient availability.
Gardening and understanding where food comes from is an essential skill all kids should learn. By allowing wheat gardening in schools, students foster a deeper connection to nature and can understand the process of where their food comes, since wheat is in so many foods!
"I started the Wheat2school program because I found a need to effectively educate students, teachers, families, and communities about the importance of wheat in agriculture, food systems, and nutrition. Wheat2school is the first Farm-to -School program to help schools include hands-on learning experience by growing wheat in school gardens, harvesting, milling, and baking a delicious whole wheat food for kids to taste. Wheat, as a whole grain food, is part of a nutrient-dense meal that provides beneficial macro and micronutrients to nourish our bodies."
